Particles and Polymers Near Interfaces: Fundamentals and Applications
    Focus and Scope
The main theme of the workshop are the fundamentals of interactions between surfaces and mesoscale objects such as particles and polymers. We shall further bridge between fundamental colloid and polymer science and actual applications. The workshop will communicate our current understanding of equilibrium and dynamic effects in such systems. In particular, it will focus on the behavior of polymer chains and particles near and at interfaces, resulting colloidal forces between surfaces, interfacial rheology and hydrodynamics, and electrostatic phenomena. Topics to be discussed in the workshop include, for example, simulation of colloidal forces, effects of surface roughness and proximal adsorption on surface forces, lateral capillary forces, and two-dimensional colloid systems. These fundamental issues will be challenged by technological applications of particles and polymers, including multicomponent flocculation systems in papermaking and particle size effects in industrial process engineering. Applications in biology and environmental science will be adressed as well, in particular, the interfacial processes relevant for electrical coupling of cell membranes and semiconductors, and in the environmental transmission of pathogens.
